Tom Sawyer was a young boy who lived with his aunt Polly and his brother Sid in the village of St Petersburg, by the Mississippi. He was a good boy, but he always got himself into trouble.
One day, Aunt Polly was looking for him. Suddenly he appeared with jam on his face.
Aunt Polly: Tom, I told you not to eat the jam! Tom: Uh, well… Aunt Polly, look behind you!
As Aunt Polly turned around, Tom ran out of the house, before she could ask him anything.
4
Tom was still running when he saw a strange boy. Tom looked at him and his new clothes and shoes. He didn't like the strange boy
Tom: You! What's your name? Boy: I'm not going to tell you! Tom: You must tell me! I want to know. Boy: No! You tell me your name! Tom: I asked you first!
5
Tom and the boy started fighting. They punched and scratched each other. The boy ran away crying. It was getting late, so Tom climbed through the bedroom window, because he didn't want his Aunt Polly to see him. But Aunt Polly was standing there, in his bedroom. She was very angry!
Aunt Polly: Thomas Sawyer! For what you did just now, you'll paint the fence tomorrow!
6
The next morning, Tom was standing in front of the fence. It was very long and very high. As he started painting, Ben, a friend from school, came by…
Ben: I'm going to the river, do you want to come with me?
Tom really wanted to go but he knew he couldn’t. Then, he had an idea.
Tom: Aunt Polly let me paint the fence. Nobody else can do it, you know. Ben: What do you mean? I can do it!
Ben gave Tom five of his marbles to let him paint. More boys came by, and Tom got them to do the job for him. In the afternoon the fence was as good as new, Tom had a lot of new toys and Aunt Polly was very pleased.

It was Monday morning, time for school. But Tom was very lazy on Monday mornings. He started moaning.
Aunt Polly: What's the matter, Tom? Tom: Oh, I'm dying! I'm not well. My tooth hurts! Aunt Polly: We'll pull it out, then. Open your mouth. Tom: No, no, I'm OK now, Aunty!
10
But Aunt Polly pulled out his tooth and Tom was very proud of the gap in his teeth, because he could spit and whistle through it. He showed off on the way to school and all the boys were jealous. Then he met his friend Huckleberry Finn. Huck lived on his own, with the help of the villagers, and he didn't go to school. Aunt Polly didn't let Tom play with Huck, but Tom did because they were friends and he liked him.
Tom: Hello, Huck, what's that? Huck: It's a dead cat. Tom: We should bury it. But I have to go to school now. Let's meet at the graveyard at midnight and bury it then
11
Tom was late for school and the teacher told him to sit with the girls. Tom was happy, because he could sit next to Becky Thatcher, the new girl in school. She was very beautiful and Tom liked her a lot. Tom started drawing.
Becky: Let me see. Who's that? Tom: It's you. Becky: It's nice. I can't draw. Tom: I can show you how! Let's meet after school.
12
After school, Tom met Becky. He gave her a pencil and together they drew a house. Then they started talking.
Tom: Do you like rats? Becky: No, I don't. I like chewing gum. Tom: Here, have some… Becky… do you want to get engaged to me? Becky: Well, I don't know… Tom: Come on, Becky, it's nice! Me and Amy Laurence…
She started to cry and ran away. Tom ran after her but she didn't want to listen to him. They both went home very upset.
13
That night, Tom and Huck went to the graveyard to bury the dead cat. But when they arrived there, they found out that they weren't alone. Muff Potter, Indian Joe and the doctor were there and they were arguing about something. The two boys hid behind some trees and watched in silence.
16
Suddenly, the doctor pushed Muff Potter and he fell down. He didn’t move. Indian Joe grabbed Muff Potter's knife and killed the doctor. Later, Muff Potter woke up with his knife in his hand and the dead doctor next to him. He thought he was the one who killed the doctor and Indian Joe didn’t tell him the truth.
Tom and Huckleberry waited until the men left.
Huck: Tom, we mustn't say a word. Tom: You're right, let's promise not to speak about this.
17
The next day everybody knew about the murder. Someone recognised Muff Potter's knife and soon the police arrested him.
Villager: Did you hear? Muff Potter killed the doctor! Villager: Yes! They found Muff's knife next to the body.
18
Tom was very sad. Becky wasn't talking to him and now he had this big secret! At school, he met Joe Harper, a friend, who was also sad because he had a fight with his mother that morning. So, they arranged to meet by the river at midnight to run away.
Joe: Nobody loves us. Why stay here?
Tom: Let's run away. Then they'll miss us. Let's meet by the river at midnight. I'll tell Huck, too.
19
The boys met at midnight. They had some food and other supplies with them
Tom: Let's go down the river. There are some islands down there. Joe: Good idea.
They got on a raft and went down the river. Finally, they reached Jackson's Island and there they set up camp and fell asleep immediately.
22
The next morning the boys went swimming and fishing. After that, they started exploring the island. However, the island was very small and there was nothing much to see. A few days later, the boys started to feel homesick.
Joe: I want to go home, I want to see my mother. Huck: : Yes, let's go back home. I'm bored here. Tom: No, no, listen, I’ve got an idea. It will be fun… Where's the raft?
23
Back home, everyone thought the boys were dead.
Villager: Their raft was in the river… Villager: Poor boys, they drowned! Villager: The funeral will be tomorrow.
24
On Sunday morning everyone in the village was at the boys' funeral. The people were all sad and many of them were crying. Tom: Come on, boys! Let's go in!
Suddenly, the doors opened and the three boys walked in. Aunt Polly and Joe's mother cried with joy. The boys were laughing.
25
The school holidays started, and Muff Potter’s trial was getting closer. The whole village was talking about it. Tom was very nervous and he went to find Huck.
Tom: We should do something, Huck. Huck: No, Tom, we can't! Indian Joe is very dangerous!
28
The boys felt very sorry for Muff Potter, so they went to visit him in prison. Potter was very happy to see them.
Muff Potter: Thank you boys for visiting me. You're very kind. Tom: You're a good man, Muff Potter. We know that.
29
The next morning, everyone was at the trial. A lot of witnesses spoke against Muff Potter. Then Muff's lawyer called his last witness. Everyone was surprised when they heard who it was…
Lawyer: Mr Thomas Sawyer!
Tom was nervous and scared. Indian Joe was looking at him.
Lawyer: Thomas Sawyer, where were you on the night of the murder? Tom: At the graveyard! Lawyer: What were you doing there?
30
Indian Joe was nervous now, too.
Lawyer: Did anyone see you Tom? Tom: No, I was hiding behind some trees! Lawyer: What did you see? Tom: Indian Joe, Muff Potter and the doctor were having a fight. Then, Muff fell down and Indian Joe took Muff Potter's knife and killed the doctor with it!
There was a crash! Indian Joe jumped out of the window and disappeared.
31
A few days passed but no-one could find Indian Joe. Muff was set free and there was no sign of Indian Joe. Tom was bored. He wanted to do something.
Tom: Huck, let's go and look for treasure. Huck: Sure! But where? Tom: Let's go to the haunted house. There’s always treasure in haunted houses.
34
The boys were scared at first, but soon they got excited and started exploring the haunted house. While they were upstairs, they heard voices. There were two men in the house. The boys recognised one of them. He was new in the village, and people called him "The Spaniard". But when he spoke, the boys realised that “The Spaniard” was Indian Joe in disguise! Tom and Huck stood still and listened. The men were talking about stolen money!
Indian Joe: We must hide the money now. Man: Yes, let's hide it here, under the floor.
35
As the men were digging, they found something under the floor. It was a box! They opened it and saw that it was full of…
Man: Treasure! Look at all this money! We're rich! Indian Joe: Shh! Nobody must know! We must hide the treasure! Man: Yes, but where? Indian Joe: We'll hide it at "number two", under the cross! Let's go.
36
The boys decided to find out where "number two" was. But they had no idea where to look. In the meantime, the people of the village were organising a picnic Saturday. Tom was very excited because Becky Thatcher would be there.
37
Everyone had a great time at the picnic and in the afternoon they all decided to explore the nearby cave. So they got some candles and started exploring. Tom and Becky went deeper and deeper into the cave when, suddenly, they realised that they were alone and lost in the cave!
Tom: Becky, I was a fool! I didn't make any marks and now I can't find the way out! Becky: Oh, no! We're lost!
40
Many hours passed. The children were hungry, tired and cold. Becky just cried. Tom decided to do something. But as he was wandering in the cave, he almost bumped into… Indian Joe! He ran to Becky and told her to be quiet.
41
The children spent three whole days in the cave, but in the end, Tom found a way out.
Everybody in the village was very happy to see them alive and well. Tom was the hero of the day.
Tom: …and that is how we got out. Oh, I just want to sleep now, I'm very tired!
42
Two weeks later, Tom was at Becky's house and he was talking to Judge Thatcher, Becky's dad, about their adventure in the cave. Just then, Judge Thatcher said that they put a huge iron door to the entrance of the cave. When he heard that, Tom went white!
Judge Thatcher: What's the matter Tom? Tom: Oh, Judge, Indian Joe is in the cave! I saw him!
Judge Thatcher immediately sent some men to the cave, but unfortunately they found Indian Joe dead!
43
Tom's mind was still on the treasure. He went to find Huck.
Tom: Huck, the treasure is in the cave! Huck: No! How do you know? Tom: I saw the cross and Indian Joe was there, too! "Number two" is in the cave!
So the boys went to the cave. Tom led the way.
46
They found the place and started digging under the cross. The treasure was there!
They put the money in two bags and went back to the village.
47
The boys went to Widow Douglas' house because she was having a party and everyone was there. Widow Douglas had no children and she loved Huck very much. She wanted to help him…
Widow Douglas: It isn't right for a child to be alone in life. Huck can live with me. He'll go
to school and he'll have money to start a business later. Tom: Huck doesn't need money. Huck's rich! Wait a minute and I'll show you.
48
Tom brought the bags into the house. He put them on the table and said:
Tom: There - what did I tell you? Half of it is Huck's, and half of it is mine
Nobody spoke. Then, everyone started asking the boys questions and Tom was happy to tell them the whole story. When they counted the money, they found out it was more than twelve thousand dollars!
So Huck went to live with Widow Douglas, the boys put their money in the bank, and they started thinking about their next big adventure…
